Four generations of Dunham's have enjoyed raising rabbits. Among the many breeds raised since the early 1900’s, Netherland Dwarfs have been a constant. The Netherland dwarf is the smallest of the 50 current breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA).Netherland Dwarfs are divided into 5 color groups, Self, Shaded, Agouti, Tan Pattern, and AOV (any other variety) and judged according to the ARBA standard. The Dunham Farm breeds for “type and temperament". A calm, gentle disposition that is extraordinary compared to most domestic rabbit breeds. Due to decades of selective breeding, our Netherland Dwarf bunnies have amazingly calm temperaments and have made the ideal pets for many people across the country and even overseas. Here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where raising larger livestock may be impossible, many students have found our Netherland Dwarfs to be outstanding project animals for 4-H and FFA.
In the enchanting realm of rabbits, there exists a breed that embodies pure charm and adorable elegance—the Netherland Dwarf. With its petite size and captivating features, this diminutive creature is a favorite among rabbit enthusiasts and admirers alike. Standing no more than 6 inches tall and weighing a mere 2 pounds, the Netherland Dwarf is a true embodiment of the saying, "Good things come in small packages."
At first glance, one is immediately captivated by the Netherland Dwarf's delicate and endearing appearance. Their round heads, adorned with expressive, bright eyes, give them an innocent and perpetually curious expression. Their ears, although compact, are perfectly proportional to their small bodies, adding to their overall charm. The rabbits come in a plethora of colors and patterns, including solid shades like black, blue, and chestnut, as well as striking combinations such as tortoiseshell and harlequin. Each Netherland Dwarf has a distinct coat that is soft and dense, inviting gentle caresses and providing an indulgence for the senses.
Beyond their aesthetic allure, Netherland Dwarf rabbits are known for their lively and spirited personalities. Despite their small size, these rabbits possess boundless energy and an inquisitive nature. Watching them playfully hop around with agility and grace is nothing short of captivating. Their mischievous antics, combined with their playful nature, can bring endless joy to their human companions. With proper care and a loving environment, Netherland Dwarfs can form strong bonds with their owners, reciprocating affection with gentle nuzzles and expressive gestures.
The intelligence of the Netherland Dwarf is as impressive as its physical attributes. These rabbits have a keen ability to learn, making them amenable to training. They can quickly grasp commands and respond to their names, showcasing their remarkable adaptability. Whether it's navigating through obstacle courses or participating in small tricks, these rabbits are eager to please and impress their human companions. Their intelligence, coupled with their friendly disposition, makes them suitable companions for both families and individuals seeking a loyal and engaging pet.
The care and well-being of a Netherland Dwarf require special attention due to its compact size. Their small frames make them more delicate compared to larger breeds, necessitating a controlled and nurturing environment. Their living spaces should provide ample room for movement, along with cozy hideaways for relaxation. A balanced diet, consisting of fresh hay, vegetables, and a limited amount of pellets, is crucial for their health and longevity. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian and meticulous grooming sessions help ensure their well-being and keep their beautiful coats in pristine condition.
The Netherland Dwarf's enduring appeal stretches far beyond its physical beauty. It has become a beloved companion, a loyal friend, and an endless source of delight.
